March 3 is “Spread the Word to End the ‘r’ Word Day”
I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words.
I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop.

This is an issue that is VERY close to my heart. I have a sister who has a small string of autism and she turned me on to to pledge a year ago and I signed it. My sister is so sweet and so caring about every single person she meets. She really does believe that everyone is her friend. I get teary when I think of people hurting my sister, even without realizing it.

This word is extremely hurtful. You're hurting me by saying it. I will correct you and let you know I don't like it. But if you continue to use it around me, I can guarantee we won't be friends anymore. I'm serious guys, this word hurts.

Hello guys, I'm asking to borrow a few moments of your time. This is probably one of the only times I'll be doing this, because I don't believe much in pushing your views in someone else's face - however, I just wanted to stand up about something that means a lot to me for a moment here.

In my close family, I have four members that are mentally challenged due to a string of autism called Fragile X Syndrome. Until very recently, upon my aunt starting up her own (increasingly popular) blog to document the challenges she and her son face, I didn't realize how hurtful using the word 'retarded' could be - to not only her son, but her family as well. Upon spending some time roaming her posts, and the posts of her members, it became very evident to me that though it seems harmless, it can be very painful to entire families - and it's become quite upsetting to me as well.

When you think about it, there is absolutely no reason that this word should be used as a derogatory in every day speech. Though my time on earth has been short thus far, I have never found even one disabled person that has been unpleasant to me in any way, nor did they use any spiteful words to degrade another human being. Not once has a disabled person acted in such a manner that gave me any reason to believe that they didn't deserve the respect of everyone else - because they are, believe it or not, just like everyone else...if not better people then most of the rest of us.
Being able to discover on my own that my choice of words, even if meant without harm, were hurtful through the eyes of another person has been nothing short of an enlightening blessing. So in short, I'm asking you to consider doing the same thing I did - ban the r-word from your vocabulary.

Garden City High School’s “End the R-Word Day”

Garden City High School participated in Best Buddies International “End the R-Word Day” on March 3, 2011. The week-long campaign was intended to raise awareness about the derogatory use of the word “retard(ed).” Club President, Murphy Shannon, prepared morning announcements for the week of the event explaining how use of the word hurts students with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Pictured here are members of the high school’s Best Buddies Chapter posed in front of the “Spread the Word to End the Word” banner which was signed by hundreds of students and faculty to end the derogatory use of the r-word and replace it with the word “respect”.
In an art aspect, this piece contains over 20 different languages that all translate to "Love honor respect equality."
